THE STORY OF

Stuart bailey

Born on Nantucket Island & son of artist Roy Bailey, Stuart Bailey moved to Florida when he was 3. He grew up as a local Siesta Key native drawing, surfing & skateboarding. Studying Illustration at Ringling art school he graduated and had sold a t shirt design which earned him royalties during his studies. Realizing he had a love for graphic design in addition to illustration, Stuart launched his career as a designer in Southern California. Designing & illustrating apparel for global surf brands, Quiksilver, Ocean Pacific & Bodyglove which gave him that years contract to design the posters and contest jerseys for The Bud Pro Surf Tour.

A bunch of t-shirts with one that says catch it

Spending just over 3 years creating shirt designs, Stuart was looking for Opportunities in Advertising and the hopes of making billboards one day. While trying to get into advertising Stuart was in Orlando during an Action Sports Trade convention where he met a sales rep for Airwalk Shoes. The brand was one Stuart did not want to pass up so he was talked into moving to Miami Beach where he could design some Airwalk merchandise and also head the graphics department for a med sized screen printer called Universal Athletics. The company printed a large portion of college football merchandise sold through Sports Authority. That and an evening gig at a goth style nightclub magazine called Post Mortem kept him busy and learning new ways to do graphics.

Stuart also worked evenings for a social nightlife publication doing layouts for upcoming fashion models, photographers and a the agencies representing them. Ford, Next & Michelle Pomiere were some of the agencies who generated work for comp cards and photographers test portfolios. This introduced StuArt to the world of fashion and the opportunity to work and learn from seasoned photogs that worked with the top agencies in NY and Miami Beach.

While adjusting to the Miami scene advertising during the day and working at night part time with the magazine he decided to have an art show back in Sarasota exhibiting some paintings along with computer made graphics he wanted to bring a Miami style event mixed with art to his home town. Booking a DJ and filling the walls with paintings and digital art he was able to get a local art store to donate the space next to its business. The idea was to help promote the art store and framing center while having a weekend long 1 man show. Ads were purchased and a published editorial on him made the local paper for Sarasotas social scene. This helped bring a good crowd and the store was happy along with Stuarts sold out show.

Several years later a position at Beber Silverstein Group in Miami FL introduced him to the craft of writing ads & art directing. There his work received national recognition which was published in Communication Arts. Thanks to Art Director James Hale & Creative Director Joe Perz, StuArt along with his team won the agency a National Gold Addy for best Illustration for the work on an ad campaign for Flower Trading Corp.

The time was right for not looking back and going for jobs he never dreamed of.

It was then that by chance he got a job from Sonys Columbia Records in NY. to design and illustrate a greatest hits record for the rock band Mountain.

The band Mountain featuring singer and guitar player Leslie West. The drummer Corky Laing was a friend of the family through his dad. Stuarts father Roy Bailey who not only was a well known artist but had some commercial background for his illustrations. One of those illustrations was an ink etched drawing on the inside cover of Nantucket Sleigh ride, a gold selling album by mountain a few years prior. Stuart was handed the account through these relations and was blessed to have worked on the project. For a short story of Stuart and his times with the band see the music industry section of this site https://www.stuartbaileydesigns.com/musicindustry

Stuarts next position was at the Smith & Robb Agency in Ft Lauderdale Florida. The agency won dozens of local & regional addy awards giving Stuart a small collection of his own. Awarded for not only graphic design but art director and copywriter. The agency had landed an outdoor PSA campaign titled "God Speaks."  A campaign written by Charlie Robb and designed by Stuart Bailey was placed in over 200 cities across North America which continued over a decade and eventually making its way to Italy. The campaign was picked up by the OAAA and had national press for its black billboard theme showcasing various messages from God in plain simple white text. With it's 10+ years and 10,000 placed locations across North America it was just behind The Smokey Bear campaign for longest running PSA campaigns ever.

During StuArt's years at Smith & Robb he was contracted by Viacom Entertainment to do work with Music Television for his style of work in the surf industry. He designed products & merchandise for MTV his greatest dream job. Creating  off air merchandise for the episodes MTV Unplugged & MTV Summer Beach House were projects Stuart placed on top of his all time projects. Additional projects for Viacom were written story board concepts for placement on merchandise products and retail apparel for Star Treks original series, Deep Space Nine & Next Generation. All to be sold throughout the US in Blockbuster retail stores.

Stuart decided to open his own graphic design & printing company selling club flyers and posters for the music and entertainment scene. Studio12 was the company eventually changing its name to Think Graphics. Shipping flyers out of state he used a method for shipping known as Delta Dash. With airport to airport drop offs and pick ups. Delta air cargo allowed for next flight deliveries allowing him to print cut and drop off flyers that would be delivered from Ft Lauderdale to Denver same day. Promoters could pick up at the air cargo that night and have flyers on the streets that night. It was very successful for a few years keeping the focus on printing and shipping. Working with the music magazine Dvox he had a good mix of contacts giving him a lead in selling flyers for night clubs throughout the US. Not paying attention to his local Miami Beach clubs he was selling large quantity flyers for Detroit hip hop warehouse parties and Yoga festivals in Denver. Designing was not so much a priority as the money was good in simply printing and shipping. After a few years of this, there were other companies catching on and doing the same. Local competition was big and Stuart only had his design skills to compete against the business educated competitors that would eventually become companies you know today. Vista print. Realizing design was always going to be respected it could never beat low priced marketing materials that the mass would always lean towards. The challenge was to supply great design with low cost printing and that was what Stuart used to survive until he realized you can skip the hustle of printing and focus on branding. Image branding has more strength if applied correctly. Stuart used his designs to sell printing. But now he uses design to sell a brand.

Dvox magazines publisher Alex Olmes had the idea of starting his own festival and had an opportunity to do it on Miamis open sand stretched beach. The festival was held and after the event of several thousand tickets sold it was unlikely they were going to have another one the following year due to bad sound and management. But with slight chance they were given the green light to do next years event even though the event had a bad outcome. With high risk of failure Stuart was asked to re design the brand for the event in hopes to clean up its image. The same name was going to be used again even though it had not done so well the first go around. The events name was titled ULTRA. Stuart presented the idea of a more mature clean trance music look like the graphics being printed in Europe at the time. Club cream many of the music labels that were being represented in the magazine. Paul Van Dyke, Tiesto and Sasha & Digweed. With approval to change the look, Stuart designed and printed the new look for the posters. The folded 5 color silver inked flyers were distributed to every record store, nightclub & music venue from Miami to Maine. The new design had worked and with some partial design help the following years ULTRA MUSIC FEST was off and running allowing a new designer each year to be part of its success.

By 2019 ULTRA would sell 160,000 tickets for its weekend event making it the 2nd largest event in Miami just behind Art Basel. With international global touring stops throughout the world its Stuarts most successful start up contribution. The event is still as big as ever and in 2024 had its 25th year anniversary.

As time went by Stuart had not been painting much but rather getting familiar with photoshop and the digital side to fine art. He was approached by South Beach promoter John Hood. John had met Stuart in the late evenings of Miamis club life and had taken on a new club and asked Stuart if he could create an event with the use of his art in some way. StuArt had taken this opportunity to do a graphic design exhibit rather than a traditional painting show. The style and subject of work he was doing at the time was edge drivin and could be adopted to a theme he came up with. The title for the show would be named Mouse Trap. This would be the introduction to a whole new way to sell graphics and become part of the music scene. John Hood met up with Stuart about a year later when he was the lucky one to interview the band u2 for the cover story in Dvox magazine an electronic music magazine in Miami. Stuart did the art layout for Johns editorial and that was the start of Stuarts involvement with the magazine and all the global connections into electronic dance music.

In 2009 Stuart was asked create a 2nd PSA campaign titled "Recession 101" That campaign was written by Charlie Robb. Charlie hired Stuart to art direct and design the project. It was a campaign created to uplift the American people out of a recession and housing colapse. It was funded and distributed by OAAA president Nancy Fletcher. The campaign made its way into the Associations best of annual book shortly after its 2 month lease on a 45 ft vertical back lite display in Times Square NYC. The order form was sent to Stuart who produced the files for placement. The $85,000 per month placement was Stuarts biggest price yet for a purchased ad. The campaign reached its way across the US with media placed bus shelters and billboards in over 5,000 locations. It too had National evening news press.

Now settled in Sarasota Stuart got a call from a New York city Fashion designer Heather Lawton. He was asked to design a digital showcase portfolio. It was 2020 and The portfolio showcased the designers best seasonal work along with the press photos of Beyonce, Lord, Rhianna and Kardashians wearing pieces from her line. Stuart had no idea who she was and was suprised in why she called him for the job. It just so happened a good freind of his Adriana of Design Indigo, was and still is an A list graphic Designer working in Sarasota too. The 2 knew each other from working together in Ft Lauderdale & Miami years prior. Adriana would have Stuart sit in for her accounts when she traveled over seas. In addition She would forward jobs to Stuart that were not fit for her liking. The fashion designer had called Adrianna originally for the job but Adrianna had no idea who she was and sent her to Stuart. Stuart did not know who she was and thought she was a student when she mentioned the job was making a portfolio. Stuart almost declined as well but decided to help the women who sounded a bit aggresive on the phone. The New York accent combined with the frustration of trying to simply get a designer to help her was well received. By the time she had emailed Stuart he noticed 1 of the files was a write up in Elle Magaine. Suprised by that he googled her name and almost fell over. With a new respect and excitment to not only design for her, it was her portfolio. He made sure to do 1 thing and that was keep the project about her and not get side tracked making a layout that was going to look good in my book. The 2 worked well together for 2 weeks and Heather was happy with the outcome and Stuart put another notch in his accolades.

Who knew such a glamour job would come while living back in Sarasota. This was good as now anything is possible no matter where you live.

He got used to the slower pace in Sarasota while meeting a friend that just moved his family from Miami to Venice island just south of Sarasota. His friend started a small sign shop and invited Stuart to come down and help. So Stuart did and eventually moved to Venice himself where he became partners with his friend and 2 others forming Koworx Media. The large complex was a combination of office shared space with creative individuals networking with each other. There was a comic book collector, a hip hop music production studio, a photography studio, social media section and even a church. Stuart met the local billboard company who's family owned 32 billboards in the tri county area. StuArt made his way into selling a few boards to creating their website. Naming the company VeniceBillboards.com Stuarts side project is making place holders for the boards when they are empty. But the boards are mostly rented until the next client in line goes up. Stuart manages the website and leeds keeping his apatite for outdoor media full.

In 2021 Stuarts design for The Rock Group Mountain was published on Rolling Stones Home page along side singer Leslie Wests artical of his passing. The image was chosen as the official image for their hit song Mississippi Queen and posted on Youtube by Sonys Columbia Records.

In 2023 Stuart designed the annual fund raising invitation for General Mike Flynn who worked under both President Obama and President Trump.

In September of 2024 Stuart entered a contest whiuch was to create the 100 year Centennial logo for the City of Venice Florida. With the most votes out of 10 finalists his spot in the final 3 is here and the outcome is this Oct 8th.
